TRYOUTS

TRYOUT DATES FOR 2023-2024 SWIM SEASON

Tryouts for the '23-'24 School year will take place on the following dates:
             Monday, May 1 ............... 7:15-8:15am
             Wednesday, May 3 ......... 7:15-8:15am
             Friday,
May 5 .................. 7:15-8:15am
All tryouts take place at the Austin Swim Club, located on Southwest Parkway. Parking is available in the parking lot out front.

You do not need to attend all three of these dates. You only need to attend one. Swimmers wishing to try out should arrive between 7:00-7:10am to check in with the coaches and get instructions before we start. You should bring a swimsuit, goggles, cap (if you wear one) and a towel. There ARE locker rooms available if you need them. Afterward, you can go home to get ready for school, or you can shower and get ready there at the pool if you don't have time to go home.

We typically try to carry a roster of around 40-50 athletes, with a close to 50/50 split of guys and girls. That usually works out to around 10-13 kids for each grade level. The reason for this size is because of travel space on buses, workout space in the water, and the number of slots available for athletes in a UIL swim meet (4 athletes/event and 1 relay/event at championship meets). If we get larger than 50, our workout lanes become overcrowded, it becomes difficult to get everyone into the meets, and we end up leaving a lot of kids behind when we compete.

Our tryouts involve the following:

10 x 100 freestyles on 2:00 interval, holding best average they can

    (5-10 minutes of rest)

1 x 200 Individual Medley (focusing on technique more than speed)

    (5-10 minutes of rest)

1 x 50 freestyle at full speed

If you do not know what any of that means, have no competitive swimming background, and are not familiar with all four competitive strokes, we would recommend you email Coach Goodwyn so we can arrange a time to talk on the phone. We are often very competitive for space, and a swimmer with no previous experience whatsoever may have a hard time making the team. Please know that this is our least favorite part of the job. We wish we had the pool and bus space so that everyone who wants to join the team could do so, but it’s just not feasible.
